Letter from Patty Brisben

Dear Students,

I founded Pure Romance in 1993 with the goal to give women a safe and comfortable place to explore their sexuality. As the leading party plan company specializing in relationship enhancement products, Pure Romance continues to provide couples with a wide range of fun and playful ways to strengthen communication and increase intimacy in their relationships.

Years before starting Pure Romance, I was a medical assistant for a cystic fibrosis specialist. My professional experience in the medical field allowed me to work with a wide array of people and improve their quality of life while dealing with different types of lung disorders. It was then I realized how fulfilling it was to care for my patients and educate people about themselves, both emotionally and physically. This experience ultimately led to my desire to improve the overall quality of women’s lives today.

Many people wonder, how does Health Education fit with Pure Romance?

Pure Romance teaches individuals about their bodies and opens the doors of communication. Many women find it difficult to talk about sexuality with their doctors, families or partners. However, Pure Romance provides women the opportunity to break down those barriers by reassuring them that it is okay to talk about their sexuality and sexual health, to explore their bodies and to not be embarrassed or ashamed. Our parties allow individuals to learn about the specifics of sexuality, as well as how to tackle controversial issues. Information about human sexuality is not designed to impose values on individuals or teach them how to have sex, but to give them the knowledge and information they need to make their own informed choices.

The sexual revolution has been a slow and challenging process for women since it first began in the late 1800’s. Pure Romance continues to fight this battle today by establishing groundbreaking efforts to serve as an educational resource to millions of women. We are proud to be involved in a national college tour, speaking as part of various human sexuality curriculums. We also participate in several research projects with the Sexual Health Research Working Group at Indiana University, home of the Kinsey Institute; overall, we’re pleased to have contributed $375,000 over the next three years to facilitate sexuality related research studies involving the Pure Romance mission. Pure Romance sexual health efforts have garnered the support of such reputable organizations as AASECT – the American Association of Sexual Educators, Counselors and Therapists.

Our most recent endeavor involves serving as a resource to breast cancer support groups nationwide with Pure Romance Presents: Sensuality, Sexuality, Survival. This innovative program was developed to give women back their quality of life associated with intimacy during and after breast cancer treatments—an issue, which until now, has gone widely unaddressed. Since its launch in 2005, it has received widespread support including the endorsement of the Young Survival Coalition.

With that being said, what are we waiting for? ‘Let’s talk about sex!’ I speak on behalf of everyone at Pure Romance when I say that we are thrilled to be a part of Sex Week at Yale this year! It is truly an honor to be invited to participate in the week’s busy activities!

Truly,

Patty Brisben
